Industrial Borosilicate Glass — The Standard Material for Process Sight Glasses
Borosilicate glass is the primary material used in industrial sight glasses, level gauges, and observation windows across the chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, oil & gas, and power generation industries. Composed of silica and boron trioxide (B₂O₃), borosilicate glass offers a unique combination of thermal shock resistance, chemical inertness, and mechanical strength that makes it indispensable for demanding process environments.
Key Technical Properties
- Thermal shock resistance: withstands rapid temperature changes (ΔT up to 120°C)
- Maximum continuous operating temperature: 450°C
- Low coefficient of thermal expansion: 3.3 × 10⁻⁶/K (borosilicate 3.3)
- Chemical resistance: resistant to acids, alkalis, solvents, and process fluids
- High optical clarity for accurate visual process monitoring
- Meets DIN 7080, DIN 7081, DIN 8902 standards for sight glass applications
Industrial Applications
- Flat gauge glass for liquid level gauges (DIN 7080 / 7081 strip glass)
- Circular sight glass discs for pressure vessel observation windows
- Borosilicate glass tubes for tubular level gauges
- Reflex and transparent sight glass replacement glass
- Reactor and vessel observation windows
- Pharmaceutical and food-grade process sight glasses
Available Forms
- Flat gauge glass strips — standard DIN sizes and custom dimensions
- Circular discs — custom OD, ID, and thickness
- Borosilicate glass tubes — various OD/ID/length combinations
- Tempered and heat-strengthened options available
